Construction begins on Thomasville facility

Construction has  begun on Second Harvest of South Georgia’s new regional distribution center in Thomasville, Georgia. This 65,000 sf facility will increasing our capacity in all functional areas.  The building will include a dry warehouse, cooler/freezer/cold dock spaces, a Kids Café kitchen, and administrative spaces.  It will feature an indoor/outdoor marketplace, allowing agencies to “shop” in a more customer-friendly/less industrial feeling space.  The facility will also include volunteer training and work spaces, as well as a multi-purpose room that will be open for use by various community organizations.

In total, the new regional distribution center will be able to store 5,000,000 pounds of food.  This enormous increase in capacity for our organization will have a direct, profound effect in the fight against hunger in South Georgia.  We will be able to feed more kids through Kids Cafe, increase our partner agencies’ reach, distribute more food and groceries, provide a fresher and better product mix, and streamline our operations and lower costs enabling us to accomplish even more with every dollar we receive.  In short, the new Thomasville facility means that we can do more to make affordable, nutritious food more easily accessible to those in South Georgia who need it most.

The construction is anticipated to take nine months.  We look forward to beginning operations in the new facility in the spring of 2014.
