Our History
Originally established as Unity Food Bank, the organization was founded to provide local nonprofits with access to food for their ministries and programs, a B2B of sorts.
The organization becomes a branch of Savannah-based America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.
Organizational changes in Savannah created an opportunity to redevelop and revitalize the local facility. The Board of Directors led by William G. Eager, Jr. hires Franklin J. Richards, II to spearhead the effort.
Operational success makes it possible for the organization to reorganize as Valdosta Food Bank and separate from ASHCG. The food bank becomes an independent subsidiary distribution organization in the America’s Second Harvest network (now Feeding America) and builds its first self-owned food bank facility.
Valdosta Food Bank earns accreditation as an affiliate member of the America’s Second Harvest food bank network and becomes Second Harvest of South Georgia, operating in a 10 county area.
Feeding America rewards SHSG’s success by expanding our service area to cover more counties with multiple branches.
SHSG opens its new regional distribution center in Thomasville.
SHSG establishes a new branch in Tifton.
Second Harvest of South Georgia breaks ground on a new headquarters facility in Valdosta.
